The story of Our Fleecy Flock
When I was made redundant in 2023 I made the decision to look into making knitting kits. I had learnt to knit as a child under the supervision of my Nana. My son in law was a shepherd and my daughter a vet in Kintyre so It felt like a great opportunity to explore a totally different direction and lifestyle, whilst using the start up skills I had learned during my many years in the NHS and Charity Sector.
I decided to invest in some sheep and started to build a flock for the specific purpose of producing wool, which I could dye using natural plants and flowers which were plentiful around Kintyre. I would then use the wool within kits which would have everything a knitter needed to be a perfect little projects for people who didn’t have a lot of time but loved to knit. I saw these as ideal for people visiting Kintyre and wanting to take a little of Kintyre back home and also for people wanting to enjoy knitting in Kintyre, especially on a rainy day or winter evening.
I made the decision to purchase 4 Poll Dorsets; they produce hardwearing, bouncy wool which has little kemp and so is excellent for dyeing. We went to Lanark Market in July 2023 and bought 4 ewes which we took back to Kilkenzie. Finn, my grandson, named them Kath, Pat, Jo and Liz. Jo and Liz were in lamb and although Liz lost her baby Jo produced a healthy girl that Isla my granddaughter named Baby Annabelle.

We continue to grow the flock buying a further 3 in 2025. We now have 15 in the flock including a handsome tup called Junior. New babies in 2026 include Ariel and Eric, Big Jimmie and Dolly and Daisy. The Dorset sheep have proved a wonderful friendly docile breed who are good mums to their lambs and calm around people.
